Active Adult communities were specifically created for residents aged 55 or older. The idea being to live in quieter neighborhoods, where there are no children or the noise and activity that comes with them. It’s a great idea and active adult communities have popped up all over Chicagoland.
Active Adult community housing is also designed for ease of living with most of them being single family ranch houses. Master bedrooms on the main level of a home take away the problems associated with staircases. You’ll find many of these ranch homes do have basements and of course stairs are needed to get to the basement. However I guess if you don’t ever want to climb up or down stairs, just don’t go to the basement. 🙂
- Active Adult neighborhoods have pro and cons. One of the most common complaints I hear from buyers is that they are very much cookie cutter homes. If this is something you don’t want, then Active Adult communities may not be the best choice for you.
- While the homes may for the most part also be single family houses, the lots are very small and an element of claustrophobia may exist, especially if you’ve lived on an acre or more in our country suburban areas here in Barrington and neighbors. Then again a small yard is better than none at all especially if you are a gardener.
As you see Active Adult neighborhoods will appeal to some of us but not others. Now it’s time to consider alternative choices if you are ready to downsize.

With all these things in mind it’s important to know that while Active Adult communities have a place in the market, we are not drenched with neighborhoods to choose from. Most of the new Active Adult neighborhoods are appearing in the west, northwest and southwest suburbs. You might not want to move in these directions. What are your choices as an Active Adult?
Active Adults can Choose Ranch Homes
We have plenty of ranch home choices here in Barrington. Active Adults can stay local, keep using all the nearby facilities, and find a ranch home with the right accommodation for them. Whether you look for a smaller home on the same lot size, a same sized home on a smaller lot, or a smaller home and lot is personal choice. You can always hire a landscaping service to mow your lawn and a snowplow service for the winter as needed.
Ranch homes afford buyers choices when it comes to basements. Use them as storage or for additional living spaces. The advantage of a ranch with a full basement is that it can double your square footage of living space. So while your ranch may be small, you’ll have enough space for a guest bedroom or suite.

Active Adults Move to Lake Barrington Shores
is a sought after location for Active Adults. As a town house and condo community, Active Adults have a homeowners association to take care of exterior maintenance, the homes are more manageable in size, the community is gated for security. These are just some of the benefits and it’s a unique lifestyle community not matched locally.
There are main level condos, a few ranch townhouses, the rest will involve staircases. At age 55 though, I can run up and down my stairs, so if you are fit and healthy, LBS is one idea for Active Adults. Oh and don’t forget the recreation center and golf course.

There are other town home neighborhoods Active Adults might consider. Barrington, Deer Park, Hawthorn Woods and Lake Zurich have some very nice town home choices. Consider these below.
Active Adults Can Choose Single Family Homes-Condo Ownership
There are a number of these in the Barrington and Inverness areas. Two I would like to highlight are Estates at Inverness Ridge and Creekside at Inverness Ridge. Both neighborhoods are adjacent and located off Barrington Road and Palatine Road. Both are condo ownership in a gated community. Your Home owners association takes care of all the yard work. There are also ranch homes for sale in these neighborhoods and smaller homes around 2600 square feet are available. So if it’s time for you to downsize, take a look at these two Inverness subdivisions.
Downsizing a Home
Active Adults are still active! If the size of your home is just too big now, you might simply look to downsize everything. Less rooms, less square footage, less costs to run, stay in your location, even keep the things you love like an acre or your style of house. You can keep gardening, feel totally independent and be set for several years more. It might also free up working capital for traveling or that sunny state vacation home.
