Rural Farm District – RFD – Long Grove
As a rural farm district the village of Long Grove has strict ordinances to make sure that the country suburban atmosphere is maintained. No sidewalks, fences or street lamps are permitted.
Although homes have street address most are also known by the number of the property and the acronym RFD. This was how the mail used to get delivered when Long Grove was more farm than anything. Now that Long Grove has expanded to a population over 8,000 the more usual method of using the street names has been adopted.
Prices rarely exceed $2 Million in Long Grove and for budget conscious buyers I have seen homes as low as $270,000. The median price is $640,000 (2016).
Long Grove is close to shopping in Lake Zurich and Buffalo Grove. Traveling is easy via I-94 to Chicago, Route 53 and I-90 to O’Hare Airport and many of the main streets to employment hubs nearby. Metra has stations at Barrington or Vernon Hills to commute by train to Chicago.

What Kind Of Homes Can You Buy in Long Grove IL Today?
You can find some of the original rural farm district types of homes here in Long Grove but for the most part it’s homes built from when the village was incorporated in 1956. Older properties offer smaller residences, many ranch homes, farmhouse, Colonial and split level styles on 1 to 2 acre lots. There were some early subdivisions in the 1960’s but may of the older homes are located along the original roads, including Old Route 53 which runs through the center of the village.
With some pretty rapid growth Long Grove is now a sought after location for buyers looking for large family homes and luxury homes. Lot sizes are still about 1 to 2 acres, home sizes have soared from the original 1,500 square feet to as high as 10,000. Brick, Stone and Stucco exteriors are common place and at the high end of the market, exterior swimming pools, in law suites and other features can be found. The mean home in Long Grove will offer 4 to 5 bedrooms, approx 3,200 square feet of living space, a 3 car garage and a 1 acre lot.
As for home styles, Colonial and traditional brick homes are the most common. Other styles are available, i.e. Tudor, Contemporary, ranch homes and cap cod.
New Construction Homes in Long Grove
Many buyers love new homes and Long Grove does have a few. Ravenna, Pond of Skycrest and Long Meadow Farms offer a few new homes, either ready for occupancy or ready to build. Alternatively choose and buy your vacant lot and build your custom home. There are usually vacant lots for sale in Long Grove but with the majority of the village being ready built, opportunities will diminish.
Children living in Long Grove IL & Schools
Long Grove itself does not have any schools. There are several school districts that come into play for children living in Long Grove. Kildeer, Lincolnshire, Lake Zurich, Mundelein are the names to look for. Stevenson High School is a huge draw for buyers looking in Long Grove. Just be careful to make sure the home of your choice is in the school district you want. Always call the school district office for boundaries and also changing of boundaries.
