Those who know me well, know I do not really like the summer weather much. When Fall arrives I am the first to want to get outside to get some fresh air, just like this morning after a frost covered the area. My husband and I started Saturday out with a 3.8 mile walk along the Grassy Lake Forest Trails which start at the Lake Barrington Village Hall. It was a cloudy day and was raining lightly on and off. However we needed the exercise and fresh air, so off we went.

We decided on the longer walk for Saturday so we could take a peak at the progress being made on the expansion of the trails. There is going to be a third trail to open next fall, the project is not a small addition either, it will add another 2 miles of gravel paths. The new trail will go across Kelsey Road and end near Fox River with the end having grass trails right to the river bank. There are some boardwalks for the wetland areas which are under construction; the addition means more wetland and countryside preservation, as well as maintaining wildlife corridors. Lake Barrington has seen a few new residential subdivisions built in the area, so it’s nice to see a village that wishes to preserve our green space areas.
If you love the country nature of living like we do, I cannot think of a better place in the Barrington area to live.
Saturday’s rain kept people away but we saw a few other country walkers. 3.8 Miles is a good walk, especially as it is not all flat. There are slow climbing hills and a few steep ones to get your legs working. It’s a great place for the family dog to get exercise too. Leash are required as is poop control, bags are provided.
Here’s a picture of the new path. In the distance we can see some of the boardwalks being built.
A little cooler than Saturday with a frost as well, but the sun was shining and the start to the day was simply glorious. Last week we had a lot of rain, it seemed like every day it rained. Flint Creek which is close to the start of the trails was running fast although no longer bursting it’s banks. It’s not very deep at this natural weir which is under Kelsey Road yet it makes for some very pretty photos now the fall colors are showing.
We set off in the other direction from Saturday, a shorter walk at 2.6 miles. The sun was shining and a few more folks had the same idea as us, or maybe it was the dogs, they were enjoying their walk. We saw some White Tailed Deer running through the brush and jumping over the path, and today the birds were singing.
Lake Barrington is a suburb of Chicago but you would never know it. Of course if you like Urban jungles, then Lake Barrington is a place you would likely have no time of day for. If you like the countryside, wildlife, nature, tranqulity and a place for a walk in the fall air, come and check out the Grassy Lake Forest Trails in Lake Barrington.
In the winter the trails can be used for cross country skiing too. People and pets are welcome but no bicycles please. Like to hike? Great we’ll see you there!
