How do you find the perfect home and how do we match you with that perfect home. No it doesn’t start with finances, it doesn’t start with communities or neighborhoods; it doesn’t start with location or proximity to a job or schools, or shopping. It starts with a dream. We all have dreams when it comes to buying the next home and although it doesn’t start with finances most of you have a pretty good idea about what you can afford and what you want to spend. You’ll be imagining a dream house with all the things you want and you start your research, often months before you commit to the process.
Whether you want to go bigger or smaller I’ll bet if I asked you to write down a list of ‘must haves‘ you’ll come up with quite the variety of things. This is your dream and it serves a really good purpose to write it down on paper. So go ahead, think about your dream home and start writing down all the things you would love to have. I want to see it!

Location, Location, Location
Now you have the dream you’ll need to start thinking about communities. When it comes to real estate it’s well known that location can drive prices up or down. Locations for home buyers are considered because:
- You have knowledge of the area
- You want to remain in the same community
- You desire a short commute time and will search communities that will give you that
- You’ve got friends recommending communities
- You are relocating and only have a broad idea about location
- A variety of other reasons, each specific to you
You may know a lot about communities or a little. You may have a community fixed in your mind or be open to alternatives. Choosing a Realtor in your desired communities is one of the fastest ways to get information. We focus on the communities of Barrington Illinois. We do this because; first we live here and second by selling homes in Barrington for 10 years we know the real estate. Every community has others close-by that are sometimes explored as alternatives. Close to the Barrington area are the homes in Kildeer, Hawthorn Woods and Long Grove. All three offer similar types and styles of housing and all have good school districts (for the most part). We’ve sold many homes in these areas as well and can guide you through the communities and neighborhoods.
Whatever your reasons for picking one or more communities, write those reasons down on the list of dreams, because location is important too.
Location Set, Let’s Talk Neighborhoods
Each of the Barrington areas has some level of uniqueness, there are some areas of cross-over too. Neighborhoods don’t factor into many parts of the Barrington area. Most have names but you can find a neighborhood with as little as 5 homes here. It would be crazy to think you’ll find that dream home in a single neighborhood. Barrington neighborhoods have on average 30 to 40 homes. Some are smaller, others larger. Examples of larger neighborhoods are Lake Barrington Shores in Lake Barrington and Wynstone in North Barrington, these have 1317 and 437 properties respectively. Both are sought specifically because they have features buyers want. Both are gated, both have golf courses, both are considered lifestyle neighborhoods.
Generally buyers will look for homes in each community and indeed that overlap we talked about. Buyers looking in South Barrington may also consider Wynstone or Inverness. Buyers in Barrington Hills may stick with that community only if they want the acreage. It all comes down to that dream list you’ve started and letting us start the home match making process. Location by community and neighborhood is one thing but there’s more to location than that. Whether you are buying at $400,000 or $10 million , location has an effect on property value and re-sale. Part of our matchmaking process is to make sure you understand all the things that each property is presenting to you, we want your investment to be as secure as possible.
- While you’ve fallen in love with the gourmet kitchen, we may need to remind you that hiding behind the wall of evergreen trees is a road. While that road maybe a residential road, we’ve traveled them all and know how busy they can get.
- You may have fallen in love with a house that has never been lived in, you’re getting a brand new house and it’s right at the top of your dream list. We’re going to remind you that the subdivision is already 10 years old, has only 4 homes and could be a building site for goodness knows how long.

Financing Your Dream Barrington Area Home
Now you’ve considered the features you want, the locations you are interested in, we need to talk money. Most buyers of homes for the Barrington area have made some enquiries about mortgages if needed, or know what the budget is based on banking. I will have a discussion with you prior to showing property and I can pre-qualify you, but after 10 years selling Barrington homes I also know another thing. You all know what you can afford or want to pay and you all appear to have lenders lined up as needed. If that is not the case I’ll happily recommend a Barrington lender, also a long time resident of the area; he’s well versed in all mortgage types especially larger loans.
The Dream Home Search Commences
10 years experience helping buyers of Barrington homes has taught me one thing. All of you have a deadline but generally it’s not tight. This is wonderful because it really gives you the time to find the dream home. Add your deadline to your list of dreams.
The search will start with an initial set of homes that match your dreams. We can look at as little as one a day or as many as we can fit in. We’ll be governed by all the information on your dream list. Homes can be viewed all days of the week, so whatever your schedule is. Don’t feel despondent if you are not thrilled by what you see to begin with. Matching dreams to homes will take a little time.
It’s my job as we go to make notes about what you don’t like, it’s how I learn what you are really looking for, what’s most important and what you can live without.
All I ask are two things:
- If you tell me you absolutely don’t want a location, neighborhood or feature; don’t fire me because I start questioning why we suddenly start looking at those locations, neighborhoods and features. I am just doing my job and holding you to your dream!
- Be prepared to let go a few of those dream features. It’s unlikely we’ll be able to check them all off. As we look at homes I can make suggestions on how to get the features that are missing, which features will cost the most money or take the most time to achieve.
