I moved to the Barrington IL area in 1997 when our family relocated from England for my husbands job. Actually we had lived in Arlington Heights for 18 months but when his job became permanent it was time to find a place to call home rather than just a house to live in. Little did I know then how much I would love this place we call home.
Coming from England, the green and pleasant land; I had lived in many parts of the English countryside and got a sense of serenity from being away from urban places. I have lived in London twice so when we found out we were coming to Chicago, I just imagined a city like London but bigger. Little did I know that Chicago didn’t only mean the city, in our case it meant the suburbs. I am glad, I might not have come had I been destined for the urban lifestyle. It’s just not me.
Do you Love Where you Live? Here’s Why Barrington IL is My Perfect Place.
When searching for our first home to buy in Chicagoland I never dreamed of having a home on an acre. Land space is at a premium in England and an acre was too expensive for me to dream of let alone buy. Yet here I was looking at homes in the Barrington IL area that were on acre lots. We found the perfect house, an all brick ranch on an acre at the end of a cul de sac.
Deer Park was our new home. Deer Park is one of the villages in the Barrington IL area. As a family that very much does things ourselves, we went to buy a lawn tractor to mow our expansive new garden. That tractor lasted from 1997 to 2013. Not bad for $1600. It made our lawn mowing $100 a year plus some gas and riding time.
We had young kids. We flew kites in the yard, no need to go to a park. We taught the kids how to ski as we had a sloped back yard. Winter was a hoot as our front yard had a steep slope and sledding was a favorite late into the night pastime, every time it snowed. Our house backed up to a forest preserve and we often ventured in to get flowers and nature things for school projects. We had pets too and walking the dog around our neighborhood was a favorite way to relax.
Fast forward to 2004 and we move to Lake Barrington IL on 2 acres. Kids are a little older, the dog still with us and the tractor came too. I can stare out my windows and see other homes but they are too far away to see inside. You just get the feel of privacy. We know our neighbors and can chat when we want or stay private if we feel like it.
Both homes have a plethora of nature and wildlife. White Tailed Deer are always running through the yard to the conservation area. We feed birds all year long, from Woodpeckers to Blue Jays, Sparrows and Cardinals, there’s never a shortage of activity. In the warmer months we have Sand Hill Cranes frequenting our yard. They get fed too.
