Multi-Generational Living in Barrington Illinois is probably occurring more than most of us know.
What is Multi-Generational Living?
Many of us have children and until they leave for college or later, there are two generations living in a home. It’s quite normal, after all who else is going to support your kids? Multi by it’s definition is many or more than two. So whether you are old enough to have grand children that live in your home with your children, or young enough to have your parents living with you and your children, there are now three generations living in one house.
Multi-generational living has never a huge part of the make-up of residences but it has always existed. In long past days it was more common, but as society became more affluent it faded in popularity. Largely because most kids want to leave home as fast as is financially possible. Then came along a decline in our economy, heavily contributed by a plunging real estate market and children who had left home need to come back. Not only that but they were now married with children of their own.
Plunging property values, job losses in all segments, and young families especially could not afford to live independently any longer. Many young home owners struggled and ended up in foreclosure, some attempted short sales, some succeeded others did not. Looking forward many were able to move into rented homes because a job had been secured, the rest really only had one place to go, back home with Mom and Dad.
Generations living under one roof also occur because of aging parents. Ill health or inability to safely look after themselves may mean looking at assisted living or similar and often the cost is beyond reach. It’s cheaper although not always easier for aging parents to move in with one of their children.
Multi-Generational Living in Barrington
We are fortunate. Barrington is an affluent community and many of our homes are large enough to accommodate three generations. Many homes have dens or offices that can be used as additional bedrooms. We have plenty of 5 or more bedroom homes. As the price increases so does the accommodation.
Many of our Barrington villages have homes with dedicated additional living quarters. Whether you understand them as in law arrangement, nannies quarters or just more bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, Barrington homes can offer some or all of these features. Add to that our basements, many of which add some sizable living space to a home. When finished they often add additional living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. The bigger homes even have a second kitchen in the basement.
If a home is big with a large kitchen like this, it’s not too difficult to imagine two families preparing dinner at the same time or seating all your extended family members at breakfast bars and tables.
With three generations living together it’s most likely there will be tension. Depending on the size of the home, with many people under one roof, there will be arguments. Of course the property owner needs to set the rules and boundaries, and all those living in the house should respect them. But we are human and humans do not always agree. As long as we all have somewhere to go to cool off behind closed doors, because we all love one another, these arguments or disagreements should be short lived.
Are You Considering Multi-Generational Living?
Whether you are in need to house more family members right away or are planning for the future, give some thought to sleeping arrangements and bathrooms as your priority. Elderly parents may have problems with stairs so basements or upper level bedrooms may not work. A full bathroom near to the bedrooms is an ideal solution.
For children with their own children, an area for that part of your family to remain separate might be needed. Kids can make a lot of noise which you may not appreciate. Basements with bedrooms and bathrooms may work better for this scenario.
Finally remember your utility bills are about to climb and as soon as possible, all new residents should contribute to the extra expenses.
