Now you have decided to work with a buyers agent and have chosen one you think you’ll work well with, there are things your Barrington real estate agent needs to know. For us to be able to do our job properly be prepared for the following information to be sought from you.
- What are your moving plans/goals?
- Do you have a house/condo to sell?
- Do you have to sell to be able to buy?
- Are you in a lease and when does it end.
- Have you investigated the financial side of buying?
- Are you pre-qualified or pre-approved?
- Is your cash freely available?
- Do you have a wish list for the new home?
- Do you have any special needs?
- What is your buying time frame?
- What is your availability to look at homes?
- Is there anything you feel we should know about not covered in our questions?
This is not an exhaustive list but to serve you better, the more we know, the more likely you’ll be very happy.
Does My Barrington Real Estate Agent Need To Know My Financial Status?
Real estate buyers often think their Realtor should not be privy to their financial information.
Buyers should know that Barrington real estate agents are bound by the Law of Agency to keep everything you tell them about your financial status, ability to buy and negotiate confidential. Unless of course you give them permission to divulge it.
We have a professional job to do and cannot do that if we don’t have the information that helps us help you. The most important aspect is to be sure we show you homes you can afford. There’s little point at looking at homes above the budget. Most buyers will either need a mortgage or have the cash to buy. All you need to do is either speak to a lender and get your self pre-approved, or in the case of cash, have a chat with your bank and get them to write a letter giving me the upper range limit in which I should show you homes.
No seller will seriously entertain an offer without proof of ability to buy. When it comes to buying the high priced luxury homes we have here in Barrington, many sellers instruct their Barrington real estate agent, not to even show the property without proof of ability to buy.
Making an appointment to see your bank manager or a loan officer is well worth the time it will take to get a mortgage approval or letter of sufficient funds.

It’s the best way I can judge what you like or dislike about homes we view, whether your goal post is shifting and whether anything else is happening that is changing the landscape of my job as your Barrington real estate agent. Buyers often start with a set of ideals that change along the way and if I am kept in the dark you may not buy the right property.
Don’t keep your Barrington real estate agent in the dark. The goal is to help you buy the right house, not the so so house. We can switch gears but only if we know to do so.
What Not To Tell Your Barrington Real Estate Agent
